The Ilderton Safe Driving Academy is a new project from IF. It provides driving lessons for young people aged 17-25 from south-east London referred by agencies such as Connexions. The aim is simple - to help candidates pass their driving test.
The driving school is run as a social enterprise. It has three separate but connected aims:
- To provide a safe driving programme for young people nominated by organisations such as Youth Offending Teams and Connexions. This special programme will include workshops on motor maintenance, citizenship, health and safety, and responsible road use in addition to traditional driving lessons. There will also be help with the theory test. This programme will be aimed at those young people who need additional help and guidance to pass a driving test, for instance those who are young offenders or seen to be at risk in some way.
- To provide traditional one hour long driving lessons for young people nominated by schools, colleges or other youth organisations. These lessons may form part of an incentive or motivational programme
- To employ people from the south east London area to train as driving instructors
The lessons take place across the boroughs of Greenwich, Lewisham, Lambeth and Southwark, and elsewhere on request. Workshop training will take place at IF's centres in Deptford, Lambeth and Southwark as appropriate. Please remember that young people must have a provisional driving licence and be healthy to drive before they can join the programme.
